Identify the reading or comfort need
Accessibility's Follow system setting lets Fastly honor device motion and bold-text preferences. The app's own Reduce motion and Bold text switches can also request those behaviors directly.
Adjust the relevant control
Open Accessibility and review Follow system together with the related switches. This helps explain why the interface may use reduced motion even when the app's own Reduce motion toggle is off.
Accessibility includes Reduce motion, Follow system, Larger timer numerals, High contrast ring, and Bold text. Fastly also follows device text size, so check both app and system settings for the effective result.
Check the real screen
With system-following enabled, a device-level reduced-animation request contributes to the app's motion behavior. The app and device preferences are combined rather than one simply erasing the other.
| Check | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Follow system | Honor device requests |
| App switches | Can also request the behavior |
Keep presentation and records distinct
This setting concerns motion and bold text, not notification permission, widget refresh, or every device accessibility feature. Keep the scope of the control clear.
Follow system concerns device motion and bold-text preferences. An explicit in-app reduction or bold-text choice can also request that behavior; review the combination instead of assuming one toggle tells the whole story.
A worked walkthrough
Suppose the device has reduced animations enabled and Fastly's Follow system setting is on. The app can honor that request even if its own Reduce motion switch is off. Turning off Follow system changes whether the device request contributes, while explicitly enabling Reduce motion still asks for reduced motion inside the app. Bold-text behavior follows a similar combination of app and device preferences. This is why reading one toggle in isolation can be misleading when troubleshooting the effective display. Review the relevant app switch, the follow setting, and the system request, then inspect the actual screen. The setting does not promise that every aspect of the operating system is controlled from Fastly; widget refresh, notification delivery, and device text scaling have their own rules. Keep each question tied to the specific behavior the control describes, rather than treating system-following as a single global mode.
